So here we are at Star Wars Rebels, the first video entry into the new Star Wars EU. So letís see where to begin. It has been 6 years since we left Kanan and Hera at the end of A New Dawn, and apparently they have been busy. But that is jumping ahead a little.

We really start this through the eyes of a brand new young character named Ezra Bridger. Right now I can tell you that this is going to be the ĎLuke Skywalkerí of the series. I really donít like this character. Heís a... (continued)

I agree. Through the various books & comics, they've done a good job leading up to this.

And so Star Wars Rebels begins in earnest! Although I love The Clone Wars series, I am going to try to let go and embrace this new series. I can already see some tonal changes as well as the obvious animation difference, but this TV movie (that is technically the first two episodes of Season 1) has me excited to spend time with these original characters.

Just to get it out of the way, I want to elaborate on the two differences to Clone Wars that I mention above. First, the tone. The dialogue is consistent between the two series, but I am thinking Rebels will have less violence depicted on screen by way of airing on Disney XD rather than Cartoon Network. I am totally fine with this, but I just want to highlight that. If a story like this was depicted in the Clone Wars series, we probably would have seen more stormtroopers die. Here, the body count is probably one (when Kallus kicks that stormtrooper off the support beam at the end). I also doubt we will see any beheading on screen. The second difference is the animation. I like Clone Wars better, but Rebels is still serviceable. I remember not liking the Clone Wars animation until it grew on me so I am assuming the same will be true for this series. However, the hair looks very stiff and shiny in the movie and it might not have been a great idea to have Wookiees, who are made up entirely of hair, featured right off that bat.

  (continued from above)

With that out of the way, I want to agree with raistlin and Travis that the care taken to showcase these characters in the animated shorts and books makes this very enjoyable. I did not have to be introduced to all of these new characters throughout the movie since I have been acquainted with them. Although this is considered the first (double) episode, I feel like I know these guys and it is fun to jump in. However, if you do not know these guys, the movie does an excellent job at portraying their varied skillsets. They also repeat their names multiple times so you know Kanan, Hera, Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper.

The action sequences are also fun and the music uses John Williams' themes liberally. This is a terrific start for the series.

4/5
